🧺 Laundry: The Biggest Time Drain in Cleaning — and How to Cut It Down

Whether you’re cleaning your own home or flipping a vacation rental, laundry is often the biggest time drain. Towels, linens, and bedding take up valuable hours — not because they’re difficult, but because there’s simply so much of it. Fortunately, there are simple ways to streamline your laundry process without sacrificing comfort or presentation.

1. Rethink Towel Displays

We understand the appeal of perfectly layered towels — a folded hand towel over a neatly hung bath towel looks great. But here’s the problem: to reach the bath towel, guests have to touch or move the others. That means even unused hand towels and washcloths end up in the laundry, adding unnecessary loads and time.

A better approach: keep towels rolled and separated.

  • Use labeled baskets for “Bath Towels” and “Hand Towels.”
  • Guests can easily grab what they need, and rolled towels make it obvious whether they’ve been used.
  • For washcloths, only set out what’s needed for the stay, and store extras neatly in a cabinet or closet.

2. Avoid “Decorative” Laundry Traps

Placing towels on beds or draping extras over racks may look inviting, but it often creates confusion. How do you know which towels were used? You don’t — so everything gets washed “just in case.”

Instead, post a simple instruction or photo guide in the linen closet showing how clean items should be arranged. This helps guests know where to return unused linens and makes turnover faster and easier for cleaners.

3. Choose Fast-Drying Linens and Towels

Opt for lightweight, quick-drying fabrics that hold up well to frequent washing. These materials dry faster, use less energy, and keep your turnover process running smoothly — perfect for both homeowners and short-term rental operators.

4. Optimize Washer & Dryer Settings

  • Select the highest spin speed to remove as much water as possible before drying.
  • Use high heat (as fabric allows) to shorten drying time.
  • While laundry is running, make beds, restock supplies, and stage towels to keep your workflow efficient and your schedule on track.

5. Plan for Rotation

Keep a backup set of linens and towels for each room. This allows you to make up the entire house or rental while the first set is still drying. Once the laundry is complete, everything can be folded and stored for the next turnover — keeping your process smooth, predictable, and professional.

6. Outsource When It Makes Sense

Sometimes the best way to save time is to let someone else handle the laundry. Many professional cleaners (including us!) offer laundry pickup and wash-and-fold services designed specifically for short-term rentals and busy households.
